In memory of lifelong South Bay resident, surfer, lifeguard, skier/snowboarder and artisan; John G. Goodwin, we are holding a surf contest at 26th St., Manhattan Beach on November 4th.

For over 40 years, John worked as a Los Angeles County Lifeguard. He spent 15 summers teaching in the Junior Lifeguard program and another four summers working in a program for handicapped children and adults. He made a living as a potter, throwing over 20 tons of clay in his lifetime and taught at the South Bay Adult School and Palos Verdes Art Center. John surfed for the Hap Jacobs team from 1963 to 1965.He continued to surf all his life, both up and down the California coast with trips to Hawaii, Fiji and Australia. His influence and impact on the scads of South Bay youths that he taught in the Junior Guard Program was extraordinary as his instruction focused not only taking care of one's self in the ocean, but to keep an eye out for others. Many have become career lifeguards, saving lives from here to the North Shore of Oahu. The mission of the Contest is to fund the Scholarship Program, which allows under-privileged children to participate in Junior Guards, or to create and distribute water safety education material, purchase equipment for the program, or lessen expenses accrued during the regional and national Junior Guard competitions.
